Respected externally-accredited qualification body recognizes the depth and quality of Victoria Stilwell Academy’s Dog Trainer Course.
When an independent awarding body recognized by a national regulator puts a dog training school front and center on its own website, that’s worth noticing. In May 2026, Open College Network (OCN) London did exactly that, publishing a feature on its partnership with the Victoria Stilwell Academy (VSA) and the Level 5 accreditation of VSA’s flagship Dog Trainer Course.
For VSA students and graduates, whether they’re in the United States, the United Kingdom, or anywhere else in the world, the feature is more than a friendly mention. It’s outside confirmation, from an organization whose entire business is assessing educational quality, that the VSA Dog Trainer Course meets a recognized, externally verified standard.
Who is OCN London?
OCN London is a national awarding organization in the United Kingdom, recognized by Ofqual, the government body that regulates qualifications in England. It’s also a registered charity with roots going back to the 1970s, when a group of colleges came together to open up alternative pathways into education. In 2022/23 alone, OCN London awarded more than 40,000 regulated qualifications.
Dog training isn’t OCN London’s usual territory, and that’s precisely the point. VSA deliberately sought review from outside the dog training world, from an organization with no stake in any particular training school or philosophy. And it wasn’t a rubber stamp. VSA first had to be approved as an OCN London Qualified Center, and OCN London then spent nearly a year reviewing and verifying the course’s curriculum, assessment methods, and learning outcomes before awarding the VSA Dog Trainer Course its Level 5 qualification.
What OCN London had to say
OCN London’s feature zeroes in on a challenge every aspiring trainer eventually runs into, on either side of the Atlantic: dog training is an unregulated profession. After the pandemic brought a flood of online courses promising professional certification, people hoping to enter the field found themselves sorting through a crowded and confusing marketplace, where the word “certified” can mean a great deal or very little.
As OCN London points out, most dog training qualifications are designed, delivered, and certified by the same organization. That isn’t inherently a problem, and reputation within the profession matters. But it means there’s no independent check on whether a course’s content, assessment, or outcomes meet any external standard. External accreditation adds that check, so a qualification reflects what students have actually demonstrated, not just what a course promises.
What this means for VSA Dog Trainer Course students
The OCN London Level 5 Bespoke Qualification is an optional add-on for VSA Dog Trainer Course students. Those who want it can opt in and pay an additional fee, which VSA collects and passes along to OCN London. Students who choose not to pursue it lose nothing: every student who successfully completes the course remains eligible to earn the VSA-Certified Dog Trainer (VSA-CDT) credential. For those who do opt in, here’s what the Level 5 qualification adds:
- Available wherever you live. The Level 5 option is open to Dog Trainer Course students regardless of location, including the many VSA students and graduates in the United States, as well as those in Canada, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand.
- A recognized benchmark. VSA’s Bespoke Qualification has been accredited by OCN London against established quality benchmarks. Its learning outcomes and assessment criteria are benchmarked at Level 5 using the UK’s national qualification framework level descriptors. In general terms, Level 5 is roughly equivalent to two years of university-level education in the UK.
- Work reviewed by an independent assessor. After graduation, VSA submits documentation for each eligible student to OCN London for review. OCN London may also randomly select skills assessment videos for review, including the follow-up exchange between the student and their Faculty Advisor, to help ensure consistency across learning experiences.
- Credentials clients can verify. Successful learners receive an OCN London Record of Achievement listing the individual units, a printed certificate, a verifiable electronic certificate, and a digital OCN London badge for their website and marketing materials. They may also promote themselves as Level 5 Dog Trainers. As OCN London notes, an independently verified qualification gives clients, employers, and fellow professionals an objective reference point that sits outside any individual school’s marketing.
- The same elite course. Opting in doesn’t change the learning experience. Every student completes the full Dog Trainer Course: 20 video-narrated online modules and 27 live skills assessments during office hours with a dedicated Faculty Advisor.
The OCN London accreditation builds on recognition VSA has earned over more than a decade, including authorization by the State of Georgia’s Nonpublic Postsecondary Education Commission, continuing education units approved by CCPDT, IAABC, and PPAB, and VSA’s role as a founding signatory to the Joint Standards of Practice.
Why it matters now
The need for skilled, trustworthy dog professionals keeps growing. According to the American Pet Products Association’s 2026 Dog Report, dog ownership reached 71 million US households in 2025, or 53% of all households. Across the Atlantic, the PDSA Animal Wellbeing (PAW) Report 2025 puts the UK’s pet dog population at a record estimated 11.1 million. Each of these families deserves access to a trainer whose knowledge and skills have been measured against an independent standard.
